Taipei is a very safe city with low crime rates. Crowded and bustling (be aware of rush hour traffic), the city is well-known for affordable fashion with several imports from neighboring countries. Small businesses line the streets, ranging from casual family-run kitchens to more upscale restaurants and cafés. Night markets in particular are a specialty of Taipei—they're brightly lit and often packed with people savoring food, games, and other consumer goods. Vendors are often very willing to barter. Public transportation is readily available as well, with buses, subways, and taxis crowding the streets. Walking is also a very popular option, as are motorbikes, but cars are usually quite small, otherwise parking becomes something of an issue. Currently Taipei, like the rest of Taiwan, is facing a tight economic and political situation as their economic ties to China grow closer but political conflicts remain unresolved. However, its economy is expanding and becoming a major player in the global market, especially in the technology department. Its police force is becoming increasingly sophisticated and has been expanding into forensics and other scientific fields for compiling evidence. Despite this, allegations of corruption and abuse still arise once in awhile. You may find jobs here of a corporate or political nature. |
